We are a third generation family farm. Our farm is located in Frederick County, Va, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley. Stuart purchased the farm in the mid-1980 and used the farm to continuously graze cattle. Brenda and Tim, daughter and son-in-law of Stuart, began farm renovations in 2010. Working with the US Department of Agriculture, Brenda and Tim developed a plan for cross fencing and multiple automatic livestock waterers designed for rotational grazing. This plan was part of the greater Chesapeake Water Shed Program to reduce erosion. We were able to fence off a pond, spring, creek, and woodland to help preserve the environment. Brenda and Tim have also constructed multiple buildings to house animals and equipment. Timothy, son of Brenda and Tim, took a more active role on the farm after returning from college. Timothy has spent time developing marketing techniques and efficiency on the farm by researching various issues. With Brenda, Tim, and Timothy working full-time keeping up with the farm is a true team effort.
We had exposure to standard beef cattle, but wanted to look into other cattle breeds when starting our herd. We chose Dexter cattle due to their mild temperament. We wanted to be more diversified in our livestock and we decided to add Katahdin sheep to the farm. Katahdins are a breed of hair sheep that do not require shearing and are more parasite resistant than other sheep breeds. To better advance our genetics we have enrolled our flock into the National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP). This program allows our flock to be compared against other flocks across the nation and to analyze our ewes against each other. We are incorporating high quality genetics from other NSIP flocks to focus on growth and maternal traits. We are selling registered stock of both Dexters and Katahdins, so selecting the proper genetics is critical.
We also sell freezer beef and lamb. Our meat is finished at the discretion of our customers, we offer grass and grain finished options. We currently offer beef sold in quantities of 1/4, 1/2, or whole. Prices on freezer meats vary from year to year. If you are interested in buying local meat please visit the "Contact Us" page and submit the form.
