We choose to add Dexter cattle to our farm due to their docile temperament and haven't regretted the decision for a second. Dexter cattle are easy birthers and display excellent mothering traits. Dexter cattle are a wonderful addition to any farm or homestead. We began our Dexter herd with White Rock Blossom and have grown the herd to breed 22-26 cows each year. Our cows successfully nurse fall born calves as part of our pasture rotation system. Our pastures are predominantly fescue but many fields have clover as well. Depending on the size of the pasture our herd grazes a paddock for 4-7 days. This practice gives adequate recovery time to each pasture with rest periods for each paddock between 27-34 days of rest per paddock. Our typical grazing season begins in April and is completed at the end of December. Once the fescue pastures are depleted we feed round bale hay until spring grass begins to regrow. Our Dexter calves are weaned at 6-7 months of age and continue in our pasture rotation system. We select our top heifers to retain and sell as breeding stock. The renaming calves are sold as beef at 25-27 months of age.
All of our Dexter cows are registered through the American Dexter Cattle Association. Our breeding stock has tested negative for PHA and Chondrodysplasia. We have taken careful steps to advance our genetics as the Dexter breed continue to grow in popularity across the United States. We have a mixture of horned and polled cattle and are working towards a completely polled herd. If you are considering adding our genetics to your farm please check the Cattle for sale page or contact us page. We are excited to hear from you and are always open to showing you around the farm and discussing Dexter cattle.
Our Registered Dexter Bull
Helgen Farms Archie came from Illinois. He is a homozygous polled bull. He will help to transition our herd to completely polled. Archie is thick and well boned which are traits we look to add to our herd.
